Gut microbiome and neurocritically ill patients

چکیده
Since the times of Rokitansky and Cushing, we have been fascinated by connections between gut brain. Recent advances in next-generation sequencing techniques shown that this relationship is even more complex integral to our sense self than previously imagined. As these refine understanding abundance diversity bacterial microbiome, brain has redefined. Now, understood as a symbiotic network with bidirectional communication, gut-brain axis. The implication communication involves an intense focus research on variety chronic psychiatric, neurological, neurodegenerative, neuro-oncological diseases. Recently, axis studied neurologically ill patients requiring intensive care. Preliminary studies acute injury changes phenotype from one host human pathologic, termed “pathobiome.” This can contribute nosocomial pneumonia sepsis. first neurointensive care unit (NeuroICU) demonstrated microbiome neuroICU healthy matched subjects. Specifically, decrease short-chain fatty acid-producing bacteria increase harmful microbes associated mortality decreased function at discharge. Although preliminary findings are exciting opened new field NeuroICU population, there several limitations challenges. Further investigation needed confirm correlations understand their implications environment.

Abnormal Breathing Patterns Predict Extubation Failure in Neurocritically Ill Patients
In neurologically injured patients, predictors for extubation success are not well defined. Abnormal breathing patterns may result from the underlying neurological injury. We present three patients with abnormal breathing patterns highlighting failure of successful extubation as a result of these neurologically driven breathing patterns. Recognizing abnormal breathing patterns may be predictive...
متن کاملHemoglobin levels and transfusions in neurocritically ill patients: a systematic review of comparative studies
INTRODUCTION Accumulating evidence suggests that, in critically ill patients, a lower hemoglobin transfusion threshold is safe. However, the optimal hemoglobin level and associated transfusion threshold remain unknown in neurocritically ill patients. METHODS We conducted a systematic review of comparative studies (randomized and nonrandomized) to evaluate the effect of hemoglobin levels on mo...
متن کاملRole of Gut Microbiome in Polycystic Ovary Syndrome
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a complex endocrine disorder that affects 8-13% of women at reproductive age worldwide. This disorder is usually associated with menstrual disorders, infertility, obesity, and insulin resistance. The underlying cause of this syndrome is unknown, however in recent years, researchers have shown an association between intestinal microbiota alterations )dysbiosi...
متن کاملGut microbiome and liver diseases.
The gut microbiota has recently evolved as a new important player in the pathophysiology of many intestinal and extraintestinal diseases. The liver is the organ which is in closest contact with the intestinal tract, and is exposed to a substantial amount of bacterial components and metabolites. Various liver disorders such as alcoholic liver disease, non-alcoholic liver disease and primary scle...
متن کاملThe gut microbiome and hypertension.
PURPOSE OF REVIEW The mammalian mucosal surfaces are densely inhabited by a diverse microbial ecosystem termed the microbiota. Among these highly heterogeneous populations, the largest and richest is the gut microbiota, recently suggested to affect various physiological traits and susceptibility to disease. Novel metagenomic and metabolomic approaches, which have been developed in the past deca...
